Lafayette County Stories

Lafayette County was formed in the 1830s. That gives us almost two hundred years of stories. Here are a few to give you an idea of our history.

  • African American History Project

  • First Presbyterian Church

    From a speech by Will Lewis Sr. to the congregation of First Presbyterian Church on the 100th anniversary of the sanctuary in Oxford, Mississippi.

  • Cherokee Bill

    Cherokee Bill used to come to Oxford, MS and charge locals a small fee to be entertained by feats of strength, wild horse riding and fighting in the 1920s and 1930s.Description goes here

  • College Hill Church

  • Second Baptist Church

    On April 21, 1873 a group that began with both Baptist and Methodist ex-slaves purchased a church site for the sum of fifty dollars ($50.00). Many contributions were made from the White Baptist Church and citizens of Oxford in the construction of the first and second frame church.

  • St. Peters Episcopal Church

    St. Peter’s Church was organized on May 13, 1851. The current sanctuary at St. Peter’s is the oldest religious structure in Oxford.

  • Dallas

    A now extinct community in the southeast part of Lafayette County was the scene of brief violence in previous centuries. A local writer clues us in to what happend.
